Acts of violence or any behaviour that leaves you feeling harassed, bullied, intimidated, abused or discriminated against are not acceptable – whether online or not. You have a right to feel safe at University.
Durham Students’ Union is committed to creating a safe, tolerant, and inclusive environment so that all students can participate in Union events and activities that are free from bullying and harassment. Durham SU seeks to enable equal participation by challenging oppressive and discriminatory behaviour. See our core position on equality and diversity here.
We do, however, recognise that it is not enough to treat the messages shared on 7 September as a single occurrence, to simply condemn or investigate as and when events like this happen. Durham SU is clear that this incident is part of a wider cultural problem at Durham. One that the Student Officer team are dedicated to addressing and have spoken further about in their response here.
If you witness, experience or are informed of an incident which you feel may be considered misconduct, there is help available. You can report this to any member of Union staff or any full-time elected officer who can formally report this on your behalf. Visit Durham SU’s Advice Service for ways to report and receive support for any incident affecting you.
