Students deserve compensation – industrial action compensation campaign

Did the Marking and Assessment Boycott negatively impact you? Did the delay in receiving marks mean you could not take up employment offers or progress with further education options? Did you have problems getting student (or other) funding due to your missing results? If so, you might be interested in submitting your experience as part of our collective complaint for compensation.

Durham University has failed to deliver the Durham experience that students were promised.

Though we welcome the £500 ‘goodwill’ payment given to all Category 4 students (students with less than 60 credits), far more should be done to compensate all students negatively impacted by the Marking and Assessment Boycott (MAB).

That’s why we’re asking students to join together and submit a group complaint to Durham University. By sharing your experiences, you can be part of the campaign to make sure all students impacted by the MAB get what they deserve.

You have until Friday, 8 December, to join the collective complaint. The deadline for submission to the University is 31 December 2023. All you need to do is complete the form below, and we’ll do the rest.

How to join the group complaint

1. Fill out the form below by Friday 8 December

If you need help filling it out, please get in touch with our Advice Service here

2. The SU will submit your complaint alongside all others received by the SU to the Durham University complaints team

3. You will be kept informed about the outcome of the complaint

Don’t forget to share the form with as many of your friends as possible – get it in your department group chats, college pages, and anywhere other students affected by the MAB might see it. The more students submit, the better.

What will happen with the group complaint?

The complaint will be submitted to the Durham University complaints team by Durham Students’ Union on your behalf. The complaint will be handled as outlined in the University’s complaints procedure: Codes of Practice - Durham University.

You will be kept informed regarding the outcome of the process.

The University may decide to deal with the complaints on an individual basis. If this is the case, your complaint will still be submitted to the University on your behalf, and you will receive an individual outcome for your complaint.

Why get involved in a group complaint?

Over the past five years, thousands of students across the country have been impacted negatively by industrial action. Durham students are no exception. As your Students’ Union, we champion the rights of Durham students specifically, and we believe that students deserve to be fairly compensated for the negative impact that the MAB has had on their ability to progress.

By joining the group complaint, you are taking part in collective action that requires the University to consider the widespread impact that the MAB has had on all students.

What if I’d rather submit an individual complaint?

You may decide you’d rather submit an individual complaint. You have the right to do this, and you can find advice on how to do so here: What if the strikes impact my studies? @ Durham SU
