What is Assembly?

Durham SU Assembly is the body responsible for the political and campaigning side of the Union’s work. It is made up of a cross-section of student representatives and students from different communities within the University. At Assembly meetings, members discuss and debate issues that matter to Durham students.

Assembly has five core purposes:

  1. To set Durham SU’s political policy, which guides the Student Officers in their campaigning and representative work.
  2. To provide a forum for discussion, debate and resolution of issues students care about.
  3. To scrutinise the Student Officers’ work and help them to utilise their time and resources effectively.
  4. To create a space where different areas of Durham SU’s work can be reported back to the wider student community.
  5. To contribute to and approve aspects of Durham SU’s governance as directed by the Articles and the Trustee Board.

Any student can submit an idea or policy to Assembly and any student can speak for or against a motion, but only Assembly members can vote.

Assembly aims to be a welcoming and accessible body with a culture and tone that allows for differing views to be debated in a safe and supportive way. All Assembly members are responsible for acting in line with this principle.
