This is the official bit that we have to share with you - if you want a bit more plain English about what the referendum means, you can find it here.

The Durham SU Board of Trustees invites members to resolve to approve the revised proposal to amend Durham SU's Articles of Association. Durham SU has produced explanatory information as to the proposed changes on its website here. Voting will take place between 0900 on 17 February 2019 and 1700 on 20 February 2019, online through DeVote. The referendum will only pass if a two-thirds majority vote yes, and will fall if a third or more vote 'no' (abstentions don't count towards yes or no, but do count towards total turn out). Total turn out must equal a total of 5% of the members of Durham SU (ie, 5% of all students) in order for a vote to amend the articles to be valid.

The question is: “Do you agree with the proposals to amend the Durham SU Articles of Association?” and members will be able to vote either: ‘yes (I agree with the proposals), ‘no (I do not agree with the proposals)’, or ‘abstain (I abstain on the proposals)’.

The text of the final proposal is available here.

The Board has accepted two amendments to the original proposal, and have agreed a change to Article 38.3.2 and a new clause 39.3. The Board did not accept two amendments: one which would have amended Article 50.4 and one which would have amended Article 38.2. Although not an amendment to the proposed text the Board also considered a request to put the proposal to referendum as a series of questions, and decided to put the entire proposal to a single vote, in the interests of simplicity and to preserve the relationship between amendments throughout the document.
