What can you do to support the #RippedOff campaign?

Tuesday 23-10-2018 - 10:02

Four students hold a banner reading #RippedOff on the science site.

After Durham University’s decision to raise college fees by 3.5%, further pricing out students from disadvantaged backgrounds, damaging relations with the local community, and basically ripping everyone off, we're inviting you to show the University this is something we don't stand for here in Durham.

  1. Follow the campaign on Facebook.

You’ll get the most up-to-date details about ways to show your support by following this page.

  1. Change your profile picture.

There’s a personalised profile filter for every college (links at the bottom of this blog). Changing your photo will help spread the word about the campaign to make Friday’s protest Durham’s biggest yet.

  1. Play the game.

Our Pay Your Cards Right game is up in Riverside Café for you to try! You can also play the snazzy online version here.

  1. Share things on social media!

The only way to make Friday’s demonstration Durham’s biggest yet is if people know about it. Share this article, share the event, share yourself pretending to be Bruce Forsyth playing Pay Your Cards Right. Everything #RippedOff you share will make a huge difference.

  1. Make banners.

The more visual Friday’s demonstration, the better, which means there are a hold load of banner-making sessions happening in the run up to the day. Get creative at a session in your college, or come to the SU on Wednesday afternoon.

  1. Attend Thursday’s Parish Council meeting.

Thursday's meeting of the Durham City Parish Council will be debating a motion on college fees and their impact on the local community. The meeting is public so come and voice your support for the motion!

  1. Come to the De-Matriculation rally!

Remember getting all dressed up and standing in the Cathedral at matriculation, proud to be part of Durham? Well, these rises in accommodation fees are damaging our pride in Durham. Come show this to the University at the “de-matriculation” rally, which promises to be Durham's biggest yet. Either join your college in walking to Palace Green via your matriculation route, or just meet us on the green.
