Description

‘Durham University Malaysian Society (DUMAS) is a welcoming, tightly-knit student group which seeks to share Malaysia’s rich and multi-ethnic culture, warm hospitality and (most importantly) delicious Malaysian cuisine with all Durham and Stockton students. DUMAS also gives Malaysians in Durham and Stockton a platform to bond together over home comforts. We are all-inclusive and encourage everyone, wherever you are from, to become a member or simply join our events and sample Malaysian food – many of our current members are indeed not Malaysian!
Our main events celebrate Deepavali, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya (Eid) with Malaysian food, games, performances and music. These are usually in the DSU, so you won’t need to go far to join us! All our food is halal, and we provide for vegetarians too. DUMAS also provides opportunities for members to explore the North East and to meet students from Malaysian societies at other universities in the region. Whether you’ve visited Malaysia before (or will do) or are simply looking to try some fantastic food and meet new friends, we’d love for you to join our events!’
  • To share Malaysian culture and hospitality with all members of the Society and the wider community by ensuring a welcoming and all-inclusive experience for all who participate in or deal with the Society
  • To give students in Durham a chance to enjoy and/or experience Malaysian cuisine without having to travel to Newcastle, whether as a familiar home comfort or as an enriching cultural experience
  • To create opportunities for students in Durham and Stockton with a link to or interest in Malaysia to network, socialise and get to know each other in a friendly, welcoming and affordable setting
  • To make leadership opportunities available to all members of the Society, not solely members of the Executive Committee, so as to enhance the sense of society ownership among members and to contribute to their personal development
  • To provide guidance, advice and encouragement to members of the Society on adapting to university life in Durham and Stockton, whether academic, social or practical
  • To make available affordable opportunities for members to explore and experience the North East Region and to meet students from Malaysian societies at other universities in the UK
  • To foster high levels of ownership of and participation in the Society among its members in order to promote an all-inclusive environment and to ensure that the Society will continue to flourish from year to year
  • To operate on a financially sustainable basis while maintaining membership and event ticket prices at an affordable level, so as not to compromise participation
  • To contribute to the diversity and colour of the University and student groups at the University
