Durham Student Filmmaking is an all-levels friendly intercollegiate filmmaking society. We aim to give students the practical skillset and theoretical knowledge needed to make films. We encourage students to come and pitch their own projects, or create one with other members. We are not going to assign you to make what we want; we want to encourage you to find your own voice as a filmmaker. Whether you have never tried filmmaking before or you are a veteran, we hope to improve your abilities technically and conceptually. In our weekly workshops we offer a combined one-hour instructive plus one-hour hands-on approach to different areas of filmmaking, including cinematography (camera operating, lighting, composition), producing, directing, editing, sound (foley, recording, sound mixing, sound editing), film analysis (theory and criticism in plot and visual language), scriptwriting (formatting software, story structure, writing challenges) and more. Then we go to a pub after. We also host 48hr filmmaking challenges, Q&As with people in the industry, mega film socials (screening + social in collaboration with Durham's cinema societies), script competitions (where the winning script will be made and shown at our international film festival). Yes, we also host a BFI-affiliated film festival. We hope our members can all share their knowledge and ideas with each other, or even volunteer to teach or run a project. We want to be a community, not a class.
