BRINGING STUDENTS TOGETHER SINCE 1899
We exist to help you make memories and friends, explore and discover who you are, and be the person you want to be!
Here, you’ll find a warm welcome to the things you care about and the new things you want to try. Durham SU gives you a chance to meet new people from across the University, whatever your college or department.
Since 1899, students have come together through Durham Students’ Union to spend time with and stand up for each other. Today we’re a charitable organisation, all Durham students are our members, and we’re run by hundreds of student volunteers and elected student leaders.
Get involved
Student groups and Associations
Whether you’re a crocs fan or have a flair for journalism, maybe you’re a budding sports star or have a passion for all things Doctor Who. Enjoy more of your favourite activities or try something completely new!
Give It A Go!
Keep an eye on our socials for free student group Give It A Go sessions. You might just find the thing – or the people – that define your time at university or even transform your life!
A space to socialise, or just lounge!
Durham Students’ Union is housed in Dunelm House, the iconic concrete building on New Elvet, overlooking the cathedral, the River Wear and Kingsgate Bridge.
In our building you’ll find wonderful events and activities run by students (many are free too). You’ll also feel at home alone, or with friends, in our comfortable lounges. Bring your lunch, play some games, or catch up on study.
ASK
If you need a helping hand while at Durham, the Union’s ASK (Advice, Support, Knowledge) service is there for you. Student ASK Assistants are the first point of contact if you have a question or problem. Whether that’s advice with housing, academic or welfare issues or dealing with student group queries, they go above and beyond to help make student life easier to navigate.

MAKE CHANGE
Our members come together to challenge and innovate for change in student communities to strengthen the parts of Durham they value most and progress on the problems that impact them.
Campaigns
Students come together to campaign on important issues, from the climate crisis to anti-racism. What issue would you campaign on?
Student Leader and volunteering opportunities
Your SU is led by a team of incredible students elected by you. Your student Officers are here to listen and represent your views to the university. They’re your point of contact when you spot something that would make Durham better for students. You could also run to be an Officer later in the year.
