As the University faces some local opposition to its new estates masterplan and other policies (and there has been recent tension between the student and local communities), I believe it would be interesting to create resources/campaign events to encourage students to make use of locally-run independent businesses. This may comprise several elements:

  • A database/directory of independent businesses and the services they provide
  • Price-matches
  • Producing a resource for music/drama groups with alternative local (and SU) venues for use in the 2018-19 academic year (while the Assembly Rooms Theatre is closed for renovation)
  • Interviews with students about their favourite local cafe's, eateries, independent shops, etc.

It is important that this would not be seen as an attack on large companies (which employ a lot of students and local people and support the local economy), but rather a way to decrease the hegemony these businesses have by promoting student traffic amongst the small independent businesses.
