Donate blood save lives 1 638

Give Blood, Save Lives.

At Uni we are, for the most part, young and just about healthy. This means that most of us have blood to spare - more importantly, the NHS will pay us in snacks for each pint we give! You can save 3 lives and stock up on snacks in under an hour, whats not to love?!

Since arriving in Durham, I've seen that while there are some donation venues in the area, there are none in Durham City itself. It seems to me that offering a university or Union room (or even a car-park) for a pop-up blood donation centre would be a brilliant way to increase blood donations among Durham's student population and raise awareness of this brilliant cause.

Assuming we wouldn't limit attendance to students, it would also be a great way to encourage local residents to make use of university buildings and do something positive in cooperation with students.

This is not a trivial matter. We are genuinely talking about saving lives, even those of our own fellow students. As a Durham University student, I have received life saving blood transfusions myself and I am sure I am not alone in this. As a student body we definitely have the power to increase the amount of students who are willing to donate blood and become real life heroes by working for the presence of a pop up blood donation centre within the Durham City University Campus.

This is so so important! The nearest alternative blood donation centre is 2 miles away, so although I want to carry on donating - I can't. The blood donation service gets loads of people sign up during freshers but then people don't follow through due to no local donation bank.

At last! Have been moaning about this for ages! Always just cycled elsewhere but this is great and so many more people could get involved!
