Tell students about yourself

Hi, I’m Alan Wong, a Durham student studying Law. I’m originally from Hong Kong and currently based in college life here in Durham. I’m the Lead Organiser of TEDxDurhamUniversity and have been involved in student leadership, outreach, and academic representation. I’m passionate about improving the student experience, widening access, and making sure student voices are genuinely heard in decision-making across the faculty and the wider University.

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

Students can expect an approachable, proactive, and transparent Officer. I believe real change comes from listening first, then acting. I’ll regularly gather student feedback through forums, quick surveys, and informal conversations, ensuring decisions reflect a broad range of voices. I’m organised, collaborative, and confident speaking with staff and senior leadership, and I won’t shy away from raising difficult issues. I also value clear communication — keeping students updated on what’s happening behind the scenes and what progress is being made. My goal is to make representation visible, responsive, and genuinely impactful for everyone in the faculty.

Why is this role important to you?

This role matters to me because students deserve to feel heard, supported, and represented in shaping their academic experience. As someone who has studied in different systems and been involved in student leadership, I’ve seen how strong communication between students and staff can transform a faculty environment. I care deeply about academic support, fair opportunities, and ensuring all students — regardless of background — feel they belong at Durham.

I want to help improve induction and transition into university life, strengthen academic feedback channels, and ensure concerns are addressed constructively. I’m particularly passionate about access and participation, making sure opportunities within the faculty are visible and inclusive. Serving as Faculty Officer would allow me to bring energy, organisation, and advocacy to the role, working collaboratively with students, staff, and the SU to create meaningful, lasting improvements to the academic experience.

What is your pitch to students?

A Faculty Officer who listens, acts, and delivers. I’ll champion clear communication, stronger academic support, and real student input in decisions that affect us. Let’s make representation visible and effective for everyone.
