Candidate Profile

Tell students about yourself

Growing up in 2000s Hong Kong, I aspired to become a Jedi-Master from ‘Star Wars’; Awestruck by lightsabers, the power to influence others with a flick of the hand, and their unwavering commitment to helping others. Now, much like a Jedi, I don a gown studying law at Durham University.

Another long-time passion of mine is sailing. Though only a novice sailor, I had independently read-up on racing-theory and, within a month, sailed competitively against other universities.

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

I am a person of ambition and resilience who delivers value despite even the most difficult of challenges.

At Durham Law School, I was elected:

  • First-Year LLB Student-Representative,
  • Tort Law Module-Representative,
  • LLB Student-Advisor to the University’s Support & Well-being Team’s, and
  • Eventually joining the Law School’s Board of Studies as a student-member.

Despite being weeks into my first-year, I advanced the interests of my cohort by innovating and negotiating solutions that balanced both student and faculty priorities. Together with my peers, we successfully secured online law exams for our cohort to keep our academic development aligned with the legal-market’s rapidly-changing demands.

Why is this role important to you?

With rapidly-developing AI technologies in the market, I believe our social science degrees must move beyond surface-level skills, such as black-letter memorisation.

Once elected, I will negotiate for online, open-book exams, and permit the responsible use of AI tools for essay research.

At Durham Law School, I ran for student-representative against my parents’ advice, who thought it was unwise for me – an ethnic minority student with no legal background – to ‘rock the boat’. Having since been elected and secured online-law-exams alongside my peers, I believe in creating a community that looks beyond campus politics and focuses on delivering upon students' needs.

When finalising my candidate profile, I received a high-heart-rate-alert from my Apple Watch. It wasn't anxiety or fear, but knowing how much the role meant and having a vision to make our faculty work for everyone, not just the select few.

What is your pitch to students?

After a newspaper editor accused Durham of ‘grade inflation’, departments raised the bar for First-Class Honours. Our generation should not be penalised for working harder and achieving more.

As a first-year student, I successfully secured online law exams alongside my peers. As the Social Sciences Faculty President, I will rework our Faculty’s grading system so they will recognise your value

Onwards and Upwards!
