Things to do in durham over winter break

Whether you're in Durham only a little longer before heading home or if you're staying here for the winter break, here are some of our favourite picks on what you could get up to as Michaelmas term comes to an end. 

There's snow place like Ushaw House! 

If Christmas lights are your thing, then why not visit Illuminating Ushaw: Land of Enchantment. Where they transform their gardens into a Winter Wonderland.

 

The Snowman Tour at Durham Cathedral
Make it a holiday to remember, with a special screening of family-favourite The Snowman, accompanied by a live orchestra.

 

Watch Sleeping Beauty at the Gala Durham
Prepare for the panto of your dreams…this hilarious telling of the classic story mixes mayhem, music, laughter and some incredibly interesting ice cream. Click here to book a ticket!

 

Take a trip to the Coast

Weather permitting, why not enjoy a day trip to either Seaham Beach or the further afield Whitey Bay Coast? Make sure to wrap up warm, grab a hot-chocolate and enjoy the arcades!

The Newcastle winter markets are a great little trip out if you fancy an evening in the Toon! If you want a food-stall recommendation from us, visit the R-Place doughnut stall, you won’t regret it!

 

Winter Wonderland at the Botanical Gardens

Enjoy a brisk and beautiful walk through Winter Wonderland at the Botanical Gardens. Grab a leaflet and enjoy a relaxing stroll with nature.

Catch up with friends old and new at the D.U.E.L.S Christmas film screening, it's a great opportunity for relaxing at the end of term  before the holidays! 

 

Lasers of Light
If firework displays aren't your thing, end the year on a high by going to visit the Lasers of Light Show in conjunction with artist Seb Lee-Delisle. You can even download the app to control the lasers yourself! In Newcastle between 30 December - 1 January. Entry is free with shows hosted at The Baltic, the Sage and the Tyne Bridge.
