The new drugs policy has been approved by Senate, which means Durham is now officially moving towards a harm reduction policy! Thank you so much to everyone who filled out the survey earlier in the year during Michaelmas term, we couldn't have done it without you. Also, thank you to Students for Sensible Drug Policy for their years of campaigning.
However, while we are moving towards a harm reduction policy, there is still work to do. I believe there's a lot of work that needs to be done on educating students about the safe use of drugs, like other universities do, which lead the sector in this area. Also, the university hasn't agreed to allow at-home drug checking kits like several other universities (Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester, UCL, etc) allow. I expect to follow up on these conversations during the rest of my term and will keep you updated. But it's still a cause to celebrate - it's a massive step in the right direction, and it means that the university will offer support to students who need it instead of stigmatising them.
