You may have seen news and commentary on a recent UK Supreme Court ruling on the interpretation of the Equality Act (2010), which will impact the way in which Durham SU represents women students and trans students, and provides services for all students.
Nothing has changed about our care for, and duties to, trans people. We will continue to work with all student leaders who care deeply about equity and justice, to fight for a Durham University where trans students belong and thrive. We hate the fact that trans students we care about will be harmed by the effect of this ruling. Our solidarity with trans students campaigning for a change in the law isn’t in tension with our responsibility to follow the law, as interpreted by the Supreme Court. But we will likely need to change some of the things we do to be legally compliant.
The Durham SU trustees meet at the end of the month and we’ll share a further update then, after their decisions on how we will ensure we comply with the law. Until that time, we hope all students continue to take care of each other.
