Our Student Vote on whether Durham University should support the financial sustainability of Common Rooms has ended. The position has passed, receiving support from the majority of student voters and enough students voting to validate the result.

The vote, which was a referendum, asked if Durham University should support Common Rooms' financial sustainability, including the ability for each JCR to have at least one sabbatical officer without the financial burden falling on the shoulders of the students.

2123 students voted with 2048 voting ‘yes’. You can see the voting information here.

The vote serves two purposes: to demonstrate to the University student support for this action, and to mandate Durham SU Officers to work in alignment with this goal.

"If this campaign was successful, so much would improve across all the colleges from cheaper membership fees, significantly reduced college sports subs and cheaper events. Achieving this would create such a positive change in Durham as it would help student leaders achieve so much more with their organisation. It's time the University started fulfilling their promises of an inclusive, engaging and vibrant collegiate system." Rex Munson JCR President, St Mary's College

A huge thank you to those students who campaigned, and all those who voted.

The student vote was held partially in conjunction with Durham SU’s student trustee elections, and you can find out about the winners of that election here.
