Jack Ballingham: get involved in the redesigning of our student spaces

A Students’ Union on any university campus is, at its core, a community centre for all. It is a place for students representing all segments of the campus to come together, to eat, to attend activities and events, to learn through involvement, and to simply connect and have fun.

The current Durham SU building has been serving this role on campus since it opened in 1966. Generations of students have made memories inside these walls. With student numbers continuing to expand, we want to be a welcoming, fit for purpose and inviting environment for you and future students.

To make sure this is possible, we’re undertaking a reorganisation of the spaces in our building. This will include repurposing current office space, freeing up storage space, and, hopefully, moving the main bar space to the Kingsgate rooms rather than the current Riverside space. We hope that this will improve our student spaces without requiring the large investment needed to overhaul the building itself (or even to construct a new building).

While we do this, we’re asking for students interested in improving our spaces to advise on how we go about it. This is a great opportunity to get involved in shaping our own student facilities, so if you’d like to advise on redesigning on our student spaces, get in touch with us!

Complete our Student Union Building Survey to tell us what you think about our current spaces so we can include your voice in our plans. Take part and enter into a random prize draw to receive a £5 Greggs voucher (that equates to four sausage rolls by the way!)
