Durham SU statement on staff wage deductions for ASOS
We know our staff don't take the decision to strike over pensions and working conditions lightly. For Durham University to join in with a handful of other institutions intending to deduct 25% of staff pay for refusing to upload teaching materials for lessons not happening during the strike is insulting and punitive. Staff are being punished for taking strike action and then punished again for just working to their employment contract.
The Universities and Colleges Employer Association have advised its universities (including Durham) to dock staff pay over the additional days of action short of a strike (ASOS) is taken claiming it's necessary to protect the student experience.
The student experience is protected when staff are treated fairly and with respect from their employer, and therefore we call on the university to drop this bully tactic.
