Course rep wins article

Your course reps have been doing a brilliant job making sure academic staff are taking your views into account. If you have any issues on your course, remember your course reps are always there to represent you.

So, which course reps have been doing particularly great things recently?

Lizzie Lupton  – 3rd Year UG Earth Science
My greatest win as a result of the last Staff Student Consultative Committee meeting was regarding the Geophysics dissertation. 10% of the mark comes from a field trip project submitted at the end of second year. Some geophysics students were annoyed that they had not been second marked for this like a dissertation report would be, and said the marks varied by person more than they expected. I brought this up and requested that as part of the Geophysics dissertation submission, they should be marked by a second person. This was agreed, and all pieces of work underwent marking again.

Sam Whelan  – 2nd Year UG Engineering
Getting 2nd year engineers to enagage with online surveys when deep in summative season was always going to be a stretch, so a more direct approach was needed. After speaking to our Monday morning lecturer, post it notes were placed in every desk space within the lecture theatre. The unusually bright colours for a February morning created a buzz before I spoke at the beginning of the lecture to ask for feedback and said I would collect the notes at the end. This was the biggest response we've ever received – more than double!
