What does ISOC do?
Social Functions
DUISOC seeks to foster, develop and strengthen the community of Muslim students and students interested in Islam by providing and facilitating spaces for socialising, networking and recreation that are congruent with Islamic beliefs and principles.
Religious Functions
DUISOC seeks to support the religious & spiritual lives of Muslim students through the provision of services such as the organisation of Friday & congregational prayers; iftar during Ramadhan; and Quranic & Islamic lessons, as well as through representation within the University by cultivating meaningful working relationships, especially with the Chaplaincy.
Community Functions
DUISOC co-manages the University's 2 Islamic Prayer Rooms, which are the only Islamic prayer spaces in Durham City. These venues are not only relied on by Muslim staff and students at the University, but members of the local resident community as well. DUISOC plays a critical role in providing direction, organisation and leadership for Islamic and Muslim affairs in Durham City by working closely with the local communityy and serving as the de facto Islamic authority in making religious determinations such as prayer times & Islamic calendar.
