Description

Welcome to Effective Altruism Durham!

Effective Altruism is a movement united by the question, ‘Using the resources I have, how can I do the most good?’ Through providing a place for learning, thinking and discussion EA Durham aims to empower students to make a significant positive difference on the world. There are many promising causes that we think are important for society to work on, including: global health, AI safety, animal suffering, biotechnology, international cooperation, mental health and climate change. By carefully considering what we value and working together to pursue it, we can do an amazing amount of good.

Effective Altruism Durham aims to raise awareness of these ideas by providing a space to discuss how we can address them. For Michaelmas 2023, we’re running:

  • An eight-week seminar programme, for those who want to take doing good with their lives seriously. (The Arete Fellowship) Each week, successful applicants will do two hours of reading, and then meet for an hour to discuss their thoughts with a small cohort of other students and a mentor. Focused around what we can do to solve the world’s most pressing problems, it will culminate in a high-impact career planning session. We will also be running online cohorts for students unable to come to Durham or on a year abroad.

We love to chat and encourage you to reach out on Facebook or email (effective.altruism@durham.ac.uk) if you have any questions.
