Eight students in formal dress at national societies awards

On Wednesday 9 May, the National Societies Awards took place in Cardiff. Five of Durham’s student groups were selected for shortlisting out of over 600 nominations: Intersectional Feminism society, DICCU, Trans Association, It’s Not OK at Durham and Durham Charity Fashion Show (DUCFS).

Not only were five of our student groups shortlisted, but two won their categories. It’s Not OK at Durham won Best Campaign, Project or Initiative; and DUCFS won Best Society Event.

We spoke to the two award-winners about their success.

"We're absolutely over the moon to have been recognised for the work the campaign has done in joint partnership with the University, SU, Colleges, Associations and Societies, including connecting nationally with other universities. There is still a lot that needs to be done in Durham, but moving into the next academic year we're determined to continue to develop an intersectional and inclusive campaign that works closely with the University and student leaders to tackle sexual violence, misconduct and harassment; to continue to develop our own peer support group; and to work to help fundraise and support our local services." – It’s Not OK at Durham

“On behalf of the Durham University Charity Fashion Show Executive Committee 2018, I cannot put into words what winning the Best Society of the year award means to us. We took DUCFS to new levels this year and to have our 10 months of hard work recognised at a national level is really something special.

I’d like to thank each and every remarkable person who helped make DUCFS what it is. Last night in Cardiff, the audience was in awe of the amount we raised for such an incredible cause.

Our charity is at the heart of DUCFS and we are a project which is genuinely life-changing: Mind have told us that the £106,000 we raised is going to help over 12,000 individuals in the UK suffering from mental health problems.

Thank you to NSA for this incredible recognition, it really means the world.” – Iona Cameron, President of Durham University Charity Fashion Show 2018

We enjoy celebrating all the amazing things our student groups get up to so much that we have our own Annual Awards in June, so that we can celebrate them some more. Find out who has been shortlisted and how to buy tickets here.
