Trans Pride Durham 2019. Trans Rights are Human Rights.

Durham’s first Trans Pride is coming up, so here’s the Trans Association’s Campaigns Officer J Smith to tell you all about it…

Check out the online guide to Trans Pride Durham here.

With less than a week to go before our first Trans Pride celebration, we want to invite everyone to attend! We’ve organised a range of different talks and discussion panels focused on a variety of different areas from covering the history of Pride, to education and current issues impacting trans and non-binary people within the UK and around the world.

Pride is important in reflecting the history of our LGBTQ+ community, both in the UK and around the world. From its first inception it has been primarily political, reflecting our open resistance towards the state’s attempts to erase us. Pride is also a celebration, of the wonderful diversity of LGBTQ+ people, as well as breakthroughs that have been accomplished for LGBTQ+ civil, economic and human rights. We feel Trans Pride, provides an opportunity for us to raise awareness of the diversity of trans and non-binary people especially all of the wonderful students on our campus. We also hope it provides an opportunity for people to learn about the ongoing prejudice and discrimination trans and non-binary people face on a daily basis, from attacks on trans children to simply trying to go to the toilet.

As part of Trans Pride, we’ve organised an exciting range of events stretched over 5 days and in joint collaboration with different societies, associations, activists and external organisations. These include but are not limited to LGBTQ+ craftivism workshop, talks, discussion panels and a Trans Pride Social.  We also have our ‘LABEL-LESS’ Charity Clothes Swap and Open Mic with Durham University Amnesty International and Durham Working-Class Students Association. The clothes swap is open to everyone and we have amazing range of clothes including from Durham Charity Fashion Show. We’re operating a pay what you like scheme giving students the chance to pay as little or as much as they’d like for any clothing. All money raised will be going to support Mermaids UK, Amnesty International and the Angelou Centre

For our talks, we’re really excited to be joined by Susie Green who is CEO of Mermaids UK and will be focusing on how we can support trans youth. We have a fantastic line up of panel speakers who will be discussing topics ranging from the history of pride, to intersectional activism and the fight for trans rights. We’ve set up eventbrites with more information about each of the workshops and talks on Saturday:
