Candidate Profile

Tell students about yourself

Hi, I'm Olivia Hong, a third year BA Geography student from St Mary's. I'm an outdoor person who loves hiking, drawing, fashion, and discovering interesting things, plus, I’m addicted to matcha, coffee, and a dog person. I'm passionate about social justice; even as a child, I always wanted to stand up for those without a voice. At Durham, I've held leadership roles including SU Part-Time Officer, Student Trustee, and served in DU Volunteering, Durham in Aid of UNICEF socitey, and my church etc, while also a member in few student groups such as, Eco DU, coffee society, CU, and Hillwalking Society.

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

I will be an approachable, down to earth, kind, and fun officer. I’m a good listener, who believes every student voice matters, whether it's a small frustration or a big idea for change. I won't just sit in meetings. I'll be out in colleges, societies, and everywhere hearing what actually affects your experience.

Most importantly, I'll bring warmth, energy, and a bit of fun to everything I do.

Why is this role important to you?

As an international student, I understand that going to university is huge jump for every student. It feels daunting, overwhelming, and sometimes lonely. Over the past three years, I've experienced the highs and lows of student life here, moments of growth, challenge, and community that gave me far more than just a degree. Working as an SU Part-Time Officer last year showed me how the SU can genuinely improve students' lives when the right people advocate for them. I also met many students who struggle to feel a sense of belonging, or who feel their voice simply aren’t heard.

I see SU Officer as a bridge connecting student voices to real change. This isn't just about a title, it's about using my experience, and passion to make Durham better for everyone, especially those who feel unheard. After everything this community has given me, serving as your officer feels like the perfect way to give back.

What is your pitch to students?

I’m Olivia, someone who genuinely cares about student life, and is keen to turn student voice into actions. I’m passionate about student support, campus food, and cost of living. I believe every student deserves to be heard.

Vote for Olivia, for a more inclusive, supportive, and vibrant Durham community.
