Candidate Profile

Tell students about yourself

I’m a second year from Renfrewshire, in Scotland, studying History and Politics. Through Durham societies and my college I feel like I’ve found a home and community that makes my Durham experience special. I’m on the exec of the Durham University Orchestral Society, playing bassoon in the Symphony orchestra, and regularly debate competitively for Durham. Beyond Durham, I’m involved in Scottish debating, coaching for Team Scotland and assisting charities with outreach in many deprived areas.

If elected, what sort of Officer can students expect you be?

If elected, students can expect me to passionately stand for our interests and ensure all voices are heard. Decisions are best made together and I will ensure there are opportunities, through further transparency and open discussion forums, to hear what all students need. I’m not afraid to challenge those with authority, asking the difficult questions and fighting for our interests. Having worked on different committees, including within professional organisations, I understand how to navigate these environments and be pragmatic while still fighting for what’s right.

Why is this role important to you?

Durham has been a space in which I have been able to express myself, build friendships and feel at home in ways I never have before. I want to ensure that everyone in Durham is able to have that same opportunity. Students should not face financial barriers to full participation in student life. Work has already been done to improve access, but people slip through the cracks. I want to expand opportunities in order to remove financial barriers, working with colleges as well as independently. We must also work to create a welcoming environment for everyone from all backgrounds. I would collaborate with other officers and equality groups to advocate for change, creating forums in which all viewpoints can be heard. For society execs I would introduce training to improve the skills of our student leadership and anti-discrimination awareness to combat exclusive behaviour. Durham should be a home for everyone.

What is your pitch to students?

Vote for me to ensure our university is an environment everyone feels welcome in. I’ll dismantle barriers facing students, hold the university to account and create space for student voices to be heard.
