Advice to a fresher

Moving to university for the first time is a big life change. Whether you’re excited and counting down the days, or a little nervous due to the changes ahead, however you feel there is a good chance past freshers may have felt similar! To help you settle into Durham and all the exciting things that come with it, we asked current students what advice they would give to students coming here for the first time. Here’s what they had to say:

“Simple. You belong at Durham.”

"Make sure to join your subject’s society!”

“Keep an open mind.”

“Enjoy the journey!"

“Try something you usually wouldn’t do”

“It might not feel completely right straight away, but I promise you’ll get there”

“Make the most of your free time at the start!”

“Do what you love.”

We hope this is a little gentle encouragement to remind you that you belong here and there’s lots for you to discover on your journey ahead. If you feel like you need more advice, whether that’s on financial support, housing or your mental health you can contact our Advice Service here.
