Last week, Purple Radio hosted the Student Radio Association’s North East training day. It was a super exciting opportunity, as it’s the first time the regional training event has been held at Durham.

Purple Radio are Durham’s only student Radio Station. They’re located behind the door with the big Purple Radio logo on C-level of the SU (surprise, surprise). The station has won multiple awards over the years and has many opportunities to get involved, ranging from presenting, to podcasting, to news, to sports, to tech and so many other areas!

The SRA training days are being held all over the UK this October. In Durham, the training day featured talks from industry experts who currently work in the North East, including Tom Campbell, and Steve and Karen from Metro Radio. The training day taught students how to improve presenting, marketing, song selection and so on, as well as providing insights on how to get into radio and how the industry works.

The nominations for the Student Radio Awards in November were also announced during the training day. This is always an exciting and tense time, as stations across the UK submit entries hoping for the chance to attend the awards night at the O2 arena, where many BBC Radio 1 presenters will be present. This year, I’m so proud that Purple Radio have been nominated for two awards: their Housing Crisis Investigation was nominated for Best Journalistic Programming and Sportsfeed were nominated for Best Sport Programming.

This is such a fantastic recognition of Purple Radio’s talent, and I’m sure it marks the start of yet another successful year for the station! If you’re interested in radio and want to find out more about Purple Radio, you can visit their Facebook page here.
