At Durham SU, we’re well aware that we’re often simply associated with a huge block of concrete. Whether you’re a fan of brutalism or not, we’re more than just this building! We represent all students in Durham, and with this in mind, I thought it was about time we went out into student spaces all over the city, to talk to you and hear what you would like your Students’ Union to care about. This is how Durham SU: the Roadshow was born, and with the input of your SU Reps, it’s been great to get out and about in Durham listening to the issues that matter to you.Board with notices on and student looking at laptop

Our first stop was outside the Bill Bryson last Wednesday. With exams well underway, we decided to ask you what academic and welfare issues you’re concerned about. Unsurprisingly, many of you told us that study space is a big problem. Some of you also wanted more explanation as to why certain types of assessment are used. In terms of welfare, there were concerns about changes to the college system, the cost of college accommodation, and postgraduate engagement, among many other key issues. I’d like to thank everyone that talked to us – as representatives ofGeorge and Charlie wearing purple talking to a student outside the library. Durham students, these conversations are really important to us Officers and we look forward to having many more of them.

And the roadshow doesn’t stop there! We’ve got more dates planned and locations, and we’re currently working with your brilliant SU Reps to organise stops in your colleges. So if you see our purple stall while you’re out and about, please do come up and have a chat. We’d love to hear your ideas on what would make Durham a better place to live and study, so that we can work on making that a reality.
