Update from David: a response to the sentencing of Matthew Hedges

We are deeply saddened and disappointed to hear of the news that Matthew Hedges, a PhD student at Durham, has earlier today been handed a sentence of life imprisonment for purportedly spying for foreign powers whilst conducting research in the United Arab Emirates. This follows from a sequence of alarming developments over the past few months, with deep concerns being raised over Matthew’s welfare and treatment in detention whilst awaiting trial, with basic access to facilities and contact with family members, the British Consulate and legal representation withheld. Our thoughts are with Matthew and his family at this time.

Reportedly, the trial at which he was sentenced lasted just five minutes without a representative lawyer present, based on a confession in a language he does not speak. The British Government has on repeated occasions called for proper due process to be followed. The handling of Matthew’s case gives no reassurance that this has been the truth of the matter.

We call on the UK Government and Durham University to continue their efforts in supporting Matthew and his family, and work with the Emirati authorities to challenge this judgement and ensure the safe return of Matthew to the United Kingdom, to his family, and to Durham.
