Update from Anna: next steps for the democracy review

Anna update

Last academic year saw a vocal level of dissatisfaction with the way students are represented in Durham. We have heard these criticisms and one of my key focusses for the year will be reforming the democracy and governance of Durham Students’ Union - to create something new and better that works for students now. This work will be in the form of the “democracy review”. Overhauling our democracy is a mammoth but necessary task, and we are asking students to get involved so we can shape the future together.

As you can see in the timeline below, I’ve been working closely with students to understand and decide the best way to complete a democracy review that students can believe in, and that genuinely results in a system of representation that all students can access and trust.

Following those initial discussions, the next step is a mass consultation of students taking place in the coming weeks, to find out how students feel they could be better represented. The details on how to get involved in this will be shared widely, but if you are keen not to miss out, please get in touch using the details below.

I am looking forward to hearing the suggestions and experiences of as many students as possible. We want this review to give us clear evidence of the kind of structure you want, so that we can then implement the necessary changes to achieve this.

We are committed to sharing the main updates about the review across the SU’s main channels.
