Seun Twins: Statement on bullying and harassment

Thursday 05-08-2021 - 15:52

Durham University needs to understand that what it permits, it promotes. Students have been campaigning for years to create a culture that we can be proud of, but the University sets the precedent.

The collective work of students and staff to improve Durham’s culture is undermined, if the very institution that brings us together tolerates the unacceptable behaviours we need to tackle.

If the University does not act to address specific problems, if it instead takes a generalised approach, then it prolongs the culture that many students and staff work so hard to better. Students need to know that their College community is a space where all have dignity and respect. A lack of specific action risks normalising unacceptable behaviours. It accepts that some students and staff will not feel they belong within our University.

We express solidarity with students and staff at Trevelyan College. The culture of the University as a place of work is the culture of our University as a whole.
