Join our first university campaign to mark Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week! The campaign has been co-organised bringing together colleges, associations and societies together to provide a week where we say clearly and loudly that sexual abuse and sexual violence is not and will never be okay in Durham! We have a full programme of events, including a quiz, film screening, discussion panels, open mic and a focus group to give you the chance to help shape how we tackle issues around sexual violence and abuse on campus. We will also be giving out tons of freebies to help get you through summative deadlines and stresses!
Monday 5 February
SU Pub Quiz (18.00-21.00)
Location: Durham SU
To kick off the week, we’re taking part in organising the SU pub quiz, giving students the chance to test their knowledge, earn an extra bit of cash and help raise money to support RSACC and Be North and all the amazing work they do in supporting survivors. The questions will be ranging from sports and music, to general knowledge. Please come along and show your support!
Tuesday 6 February
The HALO Project – Interdisciplinary panel debate (18:30-20:30)
Location: Hogan Lovells Lecture Thearte, Palatine Centre
Durham University Student Halo Project presents an interdisciplinary panel bringing together a fantastic line-up of key speakers to discuss and debate the dangerous cultural practices of FGM, honour-based violence and forced marriage from four different perspectives: culture/race, gender/sexuality, the law, and education.
Wednesday 7 February
A Time for Action – Combatting sexual violence & abuse on campus focus group (17.00-18:30)
Location: CG83 (Chemistry Building, Science Site)
What do you feel needs to be done to help make Durham a safer place to study? This focus group aims to provide students with a unique opportunity to feedback on everything from previous campaigns to consent workshops as well as looking at developing a future long-term campaign around tackling sexual violence and harassment on campus. We will also be discussing new exciting projects, such as a student-led peer support group to help support survivors.
Film Screening – The Hunting Ground (19.00-21.00)
Location: CG83 (Chemistry Building, Science Site)
The Hunting Ground provides a unique reflection into the challenges and barriers students survivors have experienced on US campuses in fighting to be heard and recognised by the college administration. It also provides a chance to reflect in questioning what impact mainstream campaigns like Times Up, as well as Me Too, have had in breaking the silence around abuse as well as issues we face as students on our own campus.
Thursday 8 February
Supporting Survivors at Durham University (19.00-21.00)
Location: CG93 (Scarborough lecture theatre, Chemistry department)
We’ve a set of talks from different groups and organisations including the RSACC, which aim to highlight the support they offer, as well as the chance to discuss the barriers and challenges for survivors including on campus with a Q&A session for students to feedback.
Friday 9 February
#NotOnMyCampus Discussion Panel (19.00-21.00)
Location: ER144
As part of our link to the wider national campaign, #NotOnMyCampus we’ve organised a discussion panel bringing together representatives from the University, Support Services, SU and College Officers, Associations and Societies to discuss how we can tackle sexual violence and harassment on campus and in Durham. The topics discussed will focus on compulsory consent workshops, racialised sexual abuse and violence, and whether we’re doing enough to tackle the ‘vile culture’ of sexual violence on campus.
Saturday 10 February
Placard Making Session (14.00-16.00)
Location: Riverside Café, Durham SU
In the run up to our first ever Reclaim the Night march, we’ve organised a DIY placard making workshop in the SU giving you the chance to be as creative and artistic as you like with your signs. Cardboard, paints and pens will be provided!
Reclaim the Night Protest (20.00-)
Location: Meeting at Durham SU
This will be our first Reclaim the Night march, bringing together everyone in marching to take back the night and show sexual abuse, harassment and violence have no place in Durham or anywhere else! We will be starting from the SU and march through the central market and finish back up at the SU with a social afterwards for those who are interested.
Sunday 11 February
#NOTOnMyCampus Open Mic (19.00-21.00)
Location: The Library
Our final event of the week aims to be a show stopper with an open mic at the Library bar! We aim to provide a mixture of good company, incredible performers and the chance to mark the end of the awareness week! We will also be fundraising to help raise funds for RSACC and Be North!
