Happy New Year from everyone at Durham SU! We’re looking forward to welcoming you back for the start of term, but before you get here, we thought we’d give you a little help in achieving your New Year’s resolutions from our student groups.

I want to build something…

Got the urge to create things in 2019? Lego Society is the perfect place to start. Meeting in Riverside Bar, you can clear your mind by building your own Lego Empire. Just try not to step on a Lego brick (ouch).

I want to try something new…

The clue is in the title of this group. Try Everything Once Society hold socials trying out all Durham and the surrounding area has to offer. Past events include Quidditch and mini-golf.

I want to focus more on my degree…

One way you can help increase your subject knowledge, without sacrificing on socials, is to join an academic society. They’ll often put on guest speaker talks, and are a great way to connect with people studying the same subject as you. Browse our academic groups here.

I want to try and understand politics…

With a lot of big news coming up (we’ll refrain from saying the B-word), you might make it your resolution to be more aware of what’s going on in politics. Talk Politics is a politically neutral group, which you can join to take part in free and open debate about current politics.

I want to give blood…

Giving blood can be scary, but Blood Donation Society help make it as easy as possible for students in Durham to give blood, creating a supportive atmosphere, so that you have nothing to fear.

Whether or not resolutions are for you, you’ll find the above groups and plenty more at the Re-Freshers’ Fair on 16 January from 14:00-17:00. Student groups welcome new members throughout the year, so pop along and try a new group for 2019.
