NUS Delegate elections have closed, and our winners are Helen Paton, Tom Harwood, Clara Gallay and George Walker! Congratulations to all the candidates - there was lots of great campaigns so huge commiserations to unsuccessful candidates. You can read the manifestos of the winners below. You can find the breakdown of voting on Devote here. Thank you so much to the 2091 of you who voted in the elections - you've helped to decide who will join Megan, our SU President to elect the future leaders of NUS and set the direction of NUS by passing policy.
Students of Durham!
I’m Helen Paton - a Politics & History student at St. Mary’s. Over the last two years, I have played an active role in the Durham Community, getting involved in different aspects of the University. From being Student’s Union Rep to radio to fundraising, it has been my goal to bring cohesion to our student society – a united voice for Durham! Over the past year I’ve been heavily involved in the #RippedOff campaign - now I want to be your next NUS delegate, debating student matters, rather than pointless boycotts that have little to do with improve student living. The NUS can be more than your discount card!
A vote for Helen means:
1. Transparency becomes number one priority - do you even know the name of your NUS president, or what they stand for?
2. Depoliticize the NUS, make it representative for everyone instead of endorsing one party politics; we don´t need a monoculture.
3. Direct democracy – one student, one vote. Is it fair that only delegates get to elect the NUS president?
Most senior figures in the NUS are out of touch with what matters to students and all of the exec are in their late 20´s. If you vote for me, I’ll fight for a better representation of all our Durham students, as well as informing you via my established Facebook, Twitter and live stream presence, informing you what happens at the conference
I´ll seek to represent you all and fight for inclusion, representation, cost of living and welfare – these are the daily issues in which our student voice has been ignored. Enough is enough
The fact is you are electing a delegate that will represent Durham. Elect someone that knows what students want for the future of student politics…

Manifesto
THE NUS IS INDISPUTABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT ORGANISATION ON THE PLANET AND EVERY PRONOUNCEMENT, PROTEST, AND ELECTION MATTERS MASSIVELY TO LITERALLY EVERYONE*
Last year you elected me to defeat ISIS, build a big statue, and bring down the government.
This year I'm asking for your vote to help finish the job.
Since I was elected, anti-ISIS forces have pushed forward into the Old City of Raqqa and have seized back control of two-thirds of ISIS' de-facto capital.
My proposed NUS monument is now well under construction, as can be seen from the beautiful scaffolding atop our cathedral.
I failed in my attempt to incite violent revolution to overthrow the capitalist order, but then again so have a lot of people so 2/3 isn't bad.
THIS YEAR I AM PLEDGING TO WEILD THE MIGHTY POWER OF THE NUS TO TACKLE THE BIGGEST ISSUES OF OUR TIME ONCE MORE
I PLEDGE to end shocking NUS ageism by replacing their expensive ‘Votes at 16’ campaign with a fairer Votes For Twelve Year Olds policy instead.
I PLEDGE to SOLVE the Israel/Palestine conflict.
I PLEDGE to END the scourge of Freddo inflation.
I PLEDGE to construct an NUS funded moon base by 2022.
(But also I'll pledge to oppose the kind of people who have manifestos not dissimilar to this and use the NUS to push their political agenda, rather than help students. Last year I voted against all self-aggrandising NUS motions that did nothing to directly improve the lives of students, and pressed the NUS to tackle issues like the cost of living and Anti-Semitism on campus. I've pushed for the NUS to be more moderate, inclusive, and credible, to re-legitimise what has become a ridiculous organisation.)
*The NUS is not in fact important or relevant.
Manifesto
I am Clara, a second year studying Philosophy and Psychology, current SU representative from St Aidans college. I am running to be your NUS delegate, along with the SU’s opportunities officer Charlie Walker, LGBT+ association’s vice-president Sam Johnson-Audini, and Mildert’s SU officer George Walker.
Over my time in Durham, I’ve discovered what is involvement, and how one’s engagement can achieve great things when put to good use. Being part of my college’s SU committee for two years, I’ve become more and more familiar with the SU and its dynamics, but also more aware of the urgent problems which should be assessed. I would like to use my experience in order to represent you and your interests on a national level.
As your NUS delegate, there are three main priorities I’d like to focus on:
- Firstly, I will fight for your right for accessible, affordable and quality accommodation. I will ask the NUS to take action toward the scandalously high college accommodation fees, and also to help the Student’s Union create their own Tenant’s Union in order to hold landlords accountable for their actions.
- Secondly, I will hold the NUS accountable for their international student’s representation. I want to see the NUS pursue their effort into freezing and lowering international student’s fees, but also facilitating sabbatical positions’ accessibility for overseas students.
- Thirdly, I want the NUS to take further measures in order to tackle sexual harassment in university. I will ask for more prevention and safeguarding for both students and staff, as well as a zero tolerance policy.
I believe that I have the necessary experience, will and involvement in order to contribute effectively to the NUS Delegate Team which will represent you. Vote Clara, Charlie, Sam and George for NUS delegate!
Manifesto
I’m George, a Third Year Politics student at Van Mildert and the current Van Mildert Students’ Union Representative. I am running to be one of your NUS Delegates alongside SU Opportunities Officer Charlie Walker, LGBT+a Vice-President Sam Johnson-Audini and Aidan’s Union Officer Clara Gallay.
Over three years, I have helped lead campaigns in Durham on rising accommodation fees and paying a living wage to all staff. I have been involved in societies at both a University-wide and college level, as well as being the current Political & Causes Representative on SU Societies Committee. As one of your NUS Delegates, I would use my experience to ensure that Durham students are represented effectively at a national level.
As a delegate to NUS Conference, there are several key areas I would like to focus on. Firstly, I would want NUS to take action to make sure all students have access to quality, affordable accommodation, by supporting Students’ Unions to establish their own Tenants’ Unions and letting agents and by lobbying the government to scrap letting agent fees.
Secondly, I would like to see NUS build on the excellent work of their poverty commission, by doing more to tackle head-on the cost of living crisis at our universities, with a particular focus on the cost of student opportunities.
Thirdly, as a student with disabilities, I would like NUS to help break down the barriers facing those students. This would include reducing the hidden costs that occur through diagnosis and assessments and creating a culture that is more inclusive and supportive of students with disabilities.
I want to be part of a fantastic team of delegates so that we can use our experience to help create a representative and effective national union for Durham students. Vote George, Charlie, Sam and Clara for NUS Delegate!
