On 3 June Durham students discussed an important international matter in an open meeting and learnt about the importance of the current situation endured by the people of Palestine. Assembly members voted to support a motion “to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine”. The motion was submitted by the Durham People of Colour Association (DPOCA).
Durham Students’ Union stands in solidarity with our Palestinian students and the people of Palestine, and condemns the acts of violence by the Israeli military and state.
We stand in support of the fundamental human rights of the Palestinian people including the right to peaceful protest – to protest against being forcibly evicted from their homes, illegal occupation, and for their rights and freedoms.
The Students’ Union also condemns corporations that profit from the occupation and the UK government, which still refuses to hold Israel to account for acts of such disproportionate violence.
The scenes in Palestine have been extremely distressing. If you are struggling, the University offers a variety of support options available here: https://www.dur.ac.uk/experience/support/
