The Durham SU Officers share an updated statement on the upcoming UCU industrial action.
UCU have announced national strike dates for their ongoing disputes, from the 14-18 February, the 21 -22 February, and the 28 February to the 2 March.
When UCU members struck last term, Durham SU’s Assembly resolved that we should offer our support to them, and to call for negotiations as quickly as possible to resolve the dispute in favour of staff. UCU is now fighting for the same goals, with the same tactics, as it was last term.
Our position in response to this round of action remains the same, because this is the same dispute. It is being prolonged not by striking staff, but by the failure of both Durham University and Universities UK to meet UCU’s reasonable demands. They can resolve this situation now, and that is what they should do. By not doing so, they risk escalating the dispute and harming students’ education even further. The interests of university staff are those of students too, and universities have the power to end this dispute in favour of both.
