We caught up with Cerys Jones from DUCK's Pink Week 2024 team to learn more about the annual fundraising event, read along to discover more.

Could you tell us about DUCK and explain what Pink Week entails?

DUCK is the Durham University Charity Committee, and within this, there are different "sub-groups" - such as Pink Week. Pink Week is a week of events run by students that raises money for Breast Cancer Now, and this year, we are also raising money for Children's Cancer North and the Dragonfly Cancer Trust. In 2024, Pink Week will run from Monday, 26 February through until Monday 4 March. Currently, 14 events are planned throughout the week, from paint and sip to Zumba, a club night, and a charity dinner. There is something for everyone! 
 

Which charities are the focus of your fundraising efforts this year?
Our Charities

Breast Cancer Now combines its funding into two main purposes: to propel research and to deliver support. Our impact could be huge, and the more people who get involved, the more good we can do for those who need it.

Children's Cancer North simply aim to make life better for children with cancer. As 101 children on average are diagnosed each year with cancer at Newcastle Hospital, our Pink Week Team has been tackling 101 miles walked throughout February to help raise money in addition to our events for our charities. The Dragonfly Cancer Trust works with hospitals and hospices to support young cancer patients under 25 with a life-limiting diagnosis. They have a special focus on memory-making, helping families make each moment matter with their loved ones.
 

How can students participate in the fundraising activities?

We have multiple challenges taking place at the moment for you to be involved in, from our crochet competition and our gym challenge to our distance challenge! You can do these in your own time or message our team for support! You can also help us through donations, not necessarily monetary ones; we have a bake sale and clothes swap on Tuesday, 27 February, for which we would love contributions! You can also join us at any of our events and come and take part, buy your ticket either on the day or beforehand via Fixr.

What Pink Week event are you most excited about?
Charity Dinner Saturday, 2 March 

We are hosting a Charity Dinner at the Durham Marriott Hotel, with all profits from the evening going to our charities to help them in their endeavours. The evening will consist of an arrival drink, a fabulous three-course meal, short speeches from our charity representatives, raffle prizes kindly donated by local businesses, along with live music from The Fellows, and photography throughout! There are also surprise gifts and discount codes given to those who purchase tickets, you don't want to miss out!

All of this will cost you £40pp with the code SOCIETY40, or you can join us for live music and raffle entry at the ents price of £15pp.
