Brownies, running and yoga: how you can support refugees this month

This February, we at Durham STAR (Student Action for Refugees) are raising money for West End Refugee Service (WERS), a local organisation based in Newcastle who provide support and guidance to refugees and asylum seekers. STAR believes in welcoming refugees and asylum seekers into our communities, and WERS are an amazing charity who do just that.
Covid-19 won’t stop us raising money, even if it means we are having to find new ways to do it! For our first fundraiser, we’re running the equivalent distance of the English Channel (22 miles) between STAR members over the month. We are doing this to highlight the distances that those trying to claim asylum are forced to travel due to the lack of safe routes to the UK.
For something a bit sweeter, we are selling brownie packages for Valentine’s Day (or Galentines, or just for a friend as a pick-me-up during lockdown!). You can order from the form here. They only cost £5 for two homemade brownies and a cookie (bargain in my opinion) and will make a lovely treat for someone! Please note this is only available if you’re in Durham and the deadline to order is Sunday 14 February.
Finally, to end the month on a calming high, we are running an online yoga class with a professional instructor (cost is £3). There’s something for everyone this February! Every penny makes such a huge difference and your support means a lot, especially during this time of isolation and hardship.
