At Durham SU, we're taking a break over Christmas, which means that the Advice Service will be closed between the 18 December and the 4 January.

In the meantime, we have lots of useful resources on our online Advice Hub, and we have tried to answer some of your key questions below.

Where can I find information about my course?

You can find your course’s faculty handbook here. The handbook provides detailed information about how modules are assessed and what you need to achieve in each module to progress in your studies.

What do I do if I’m feeling behind in my studies?

University is not always easy, but if you’re struggling, you shouldn’t feel alone in this.

It’s important to raise any problems you are experiencing with your department as soon as possible, so they can help you.
You can talk to:

  • your academic adviser
  • the programme leader within your department
  • the student support officer/senior tutor in your college

I am worried about handing in my coursework on time, or completing it to the best of my ability

If you are unable to hand in a piece of coursework because of sickness or circumstances outside of your control, you will need to inform your department and apply for a concession. A granted concession often takes the form of a deadline extension to enable you to complete the piece of work.

This extension will normally last for 7 days. If you don't think this will be long enough, speak to your departmental or College Student Support staff to discuss your options.

If you believe the circumstance may impact your ability to complete your summative assessments (either at all, or to the best of your ability), you can find out more about the University’s process for submitting a Serious Adverse Circumstances (SAC) form here

You can also find lots of online resources as well as workshops that can help you with your general academic skills here
