House rental prices in Durham are going up by £10pw on average. This is due to the fact that the university regularly increases the number of students in its annual intake for first year, without considering the knock-on effects that this has for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students who aren't able to afford the constantly rising rental prices of properties in the city of Durham. Further to this, landlords are raising rental prices for no reason other than that they can, as the University is relentlessly taking in new students, and only those willing to pay ridiculously high costs to live closer to the city centre will be afford it. This is exactly the sort of issue that student unions exist to combat. If the DSU can negotiate a rental price cap, or some other agreement to keep rent prices stable for students while new accomodation is built or other alternatives provided, then this union will pull itself up from its position as the 'least trusted' and 'least engaged with' student union in the country for the 2nd year running.
