Statement from Durham SU
We are aware of the current rumours circulating our Student Officer team, and we wanted to be transparent and share the reasons behind our decision-making before this escalates further.
In the late stages of 2022, Durham SU embarked on a pioneering experiment in collaboration with Native, a leading AI development firm, to explore the potential of artificial intelligence in student governance. Through this initiative, one of our Officer Team members was designed to be a creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
We assembled a team of over 75 tech specialists and experts in behavioural psychology to participate in this groundbreaking project. The goal was to create an Officer who not only understood the intricacies of Durham but also exhibited the empathy and understanding necessary to serve as a valuable addition to our Officer team.
Therefore, we can now announce that one of your Student Officers, does not exist in the traditional sense. Instead, they are a product of an extensive array of student consultations, insights, and data meticulously curated by our AI system.
We understand that this announcement may come as a shock to many of you. Rest assured, we are committed to providing further details on this soon. In the coming days, we will release a short documentary providing a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes process and the AI-driven approach to student representation.
