We're delighted to announce that five of our student groups have been nominated for awards for the second ever National Societies Awards. The awards will take place on Friday 19 May at Nottingham Students' Union.

  • Best Society Event - Durham University Charity Kommittee, Durham University Charity Fashion Show.

  • Best Society Event - Durham Inter-Collegiate Christian Union, Story.

  • Best Campaigning Society - Durham LGBT+ Association.

  • Welfare and Inclusivity Award - Durham LGBT+ Association.

  • Best Arts and Performance Society - Durham Instep Society.

  • Best Hobby and Interest Society - Durham University Assassin's Society.

Both Durham Inter-Collegiate Christian Union (DICCU) and Durham University Charity Kommittee (DUCK) have been nominated for the Best Society Event award. DICCU have been nominated for their event - Story which was a week long event aimed at promoting faith within the Durham University community. The Durham University charity fashion show raised over £75,000 for the International Rescue Committee over the course of two evenings.

Our LGBT+ Association has been nominated for both the Welfare and Inclusivity Award and also the Best Campaigning Society. Our Associations operate differently to Societies as they are expected to run events but also run campaigns to support their members alongside running welfare sessions to ensure that the students have access to the welfare services that they require as a student.

Durham Instep Society have been nominated for Best Arts and Performance Society after doing countless shows and performances allowing members at all levels to participate in dancing. Durham University Assassin's Society have been shortlisted for Best Hobby and Interest Society - you may know Assassin's Society as the group of students who run around Durham shooting each other with NERF guns.

The nominations come as part of an awards season which has already seen Purple Radio nominated at the National Student Radio Awards in the Most Improved category, and Nightline winning the national Nightline award for most supportive student's union

Activities Officer, Kara-Jane Senior said of the nominations “I’m absolutely delighted that five of our student groups have been shortlisted for the National Societies Awards. These groups have worked hard this year to build communities and give students amazing experiences, and I am so proud of them!”

Good luck to groups that are nominated - we'll have our fingers crossed for you!

Nominations are currently open for our Durham SU Students Awards, held in June - you can submit a nomination here.
