First Generation Scholars and North East Association

The First Generation Scholars and North East Association is a student-led community that supports, empowers, and connects first-generation university students and/or those from the North East of England. Whether you're the first in your family to attend university, from a non-traditional background or a community where higher education isn't the norm, proud of your North East roots, or all three, this is your space. We exist to challenge stereotypes, celebrate local heritage, and ensure that first-generation and regional students feel seen, heard, and supported at Durham. Our goal is to build a strong, inclusive network where members can share experiences, access mentorship, and thrive academically, socially, and personally. Throughout the year, we host a wide range of activities, including: • Peer support sessions and socials • Academic and career-focused workshops • Talks and panels with inspiring first-gen role models • Community outreach and school partnership events • Campaigns for equity, inclusion, and visibility within the university • International collaborations to share first-gen experiences across borders • Fundraising to support study abroad and global exchange initiatives We also work in partnership with university departments and the Students’ Union to advocate for systemic change and help create more inclusive spaces for students from underrepresented and non-traditional backgrounds.
