The Board of Trustees is responsible for the governance and strategic management of Durham SU. The Board consists of three Durham SU Officer trustees, five student trustees, and five lay trustees.
The Board has Committees that have delegated authority in particular areas of strategic management. The Committees are reviewed each year and are:
- General Purposes Committee has delegated authority to review and approve operational matters brought forward by the management team, in advance of meetings of the Board of Trustees, to better support a focus on strategic discussion and to approve better developed proposals on reserved matters.
- Appointments Committee exercises the Board of Trustees’ powers in respect of the selection, election, or appointment of trustees and of senior staff, in line with Durham SU’s values and responsibilities and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Officer Committee deliberates, resolves, and prioritises student representation on any issue across the wide range of Durham SU’s work, and influences the delivery of Durham SU’s services, so that service delivery responds to student interest.
- Chief Executive Committee ensures that the authority delegated for the day-to-day management of Durham SU is exercised appropriately and effectively, and that the Chief Executive is supported to do well in their role.
The trustees acknowledge their responsibility to support students to determine what is in their own interest, and to respect the views of Durham SU’s members. The trustees are stewards of a thriving democratic culture, and the trustees accept that they are required to act as the ultimate authority if a political decision presents unacceptable risk to Durham SU.
