About Us

This is Durham's Society for people interested in finding out about nature and foraging. An individual may be taken by a desire to, on their daily walk to and from campus, discover which berries growing underneath the trees they can and cannot eat; they may be interested in camping, hiking, and other trips of this nature in which they take part, and wish to know more about the plants they see on these trips; to know how to use plants that grow in the UK; or they may simply want to spend more time outdoors in Durham's multiple spots of natural beauty (such as the Riverside Woods, Low Burnhall (Woodland Trust), the extensive Houghall Woods, Flass Vale and others). One of the Society's wishes is that students would have a mandatory visit to one of the latter two during their time in Durham! Regardless, if an interest is aroused by the word 'foraging', then the Durham University Foraging Society is a society for you, since no other of its nature currently exists. Please get in touch via our Instagram (@duforagingsociety) or contact our current Society President, Ross Hyde (bwdk71@durham.ac.uk), if you'd like to get involved or have any questions. - A memory from a recent spring walk and wild tea day: 'it's like nature's candy' - esteemed Foraging Society member after discovering wood sorrel, which we later used to make the well-received wood sorrel tea.
