John Snow is a modern college established in 2001, and recently relocating from Queen’s Campus to Durham City. The college takes its name from the nineteenth-century Yorkshire physician Dr John Snow, who is regarded by many as one of the greatest of all doctors – a world-leading pioneer in anaesthesia, epidemiology and public health, in addition to being Queen Victoria's obstetrician. It is written that John Snow removed the handle from the pump at a contaminated water-source in order to stop the spread of cholera; although this is largely assumed to be a myth, his work in medicine and insight into the 1854 cholera outbreak was largely the reason for outbreaks end.
We spoke to John Snow’s Union Rep, Alex Walker, to find out a little more about the college.
