Jess Madden
Trustee candidate
The one thing I'd change about Durham is to make it more inclusive so that everyone, no matter their background, feels a part of the Durham community.

Manifesto

Hi, I’m Jess, a second-year Biomedical Sciences mature student and Course Rep, Vice President of Students with Disabilities Association (and a member of several other associations!), and a former DUCK member. I’m running to be one of your Student Trustees as I believe these, and other experiences, mean I can make the SU work better for students.

I want to ensure the SU puts its resources into areas that benefit students most, and better communicates what it is working on, helping tackle the apathy to the SU many students understandably have. I am dedicated to understanding what goes on in the SU, and have the skills to work with other Trustees to agree the best ways to improve it for students.

I previously studied degree-level finance modules, and since coming to Durham have been heavily involved in both Stephenson and Collingwood colleges on two different courses. Between them, I have served as Open Day Rep, Disabilities Rep, Finance Officer, on Charities and Ball Committees and finally as MCR President.

I have been the elected Vice President of the Students with Disabilities Association (SwDA) since 2017. This gives me valuable knowledge of the workings of both the SU and the university more widely, and has allowed me to represent student interests at all levels of the university, whether voting at Assembly, working with SU Officers, or meeting with university senior management.

I am also heavily involved in my Department, this academic year I have served as Course Rep for Biosciences, stopping tutorials from being cut from courses, and have other roles including Department Open Day Rep and Student Rep on Biosciences Education committee.

I hope you’ll agree I have the right experience to make the SU work for you. If you agree please vote Jess for Student Trustee!
