Robert Smith
Trustee candidate

I grew up in East Yorkshire, this is my fourth year here in Durham and I study Physical Geography. Throughout my time in Durham, I’ve been an active member and recently a Trustee of St Aidan’s JCR, I’m now looking to take that experience forward to Durham Student Union.

Relevant experience

I am currently in my second year of being the Policy Framework Officer on St Aidan’s JCR Exec. This has given me great experience of how JCRs work. Aidan’s JCR has allowed me to exercise my passion to be involved in the student community at Durham University. I have been very engaged in Aidan’s JCR and held a JCR role since the start of my first year. I am now enthusiastic to start helping Durham’s wider student community outside of Aidan’s.

While being on Aidan’s JCR Exec, I have engaged with the DSU through our SU rep and the JCR President. Furthering this, I developed an understanding of how common rooms and the SU can effectively work together and where there are areas for improvement by sitting on and chairing the Independent Common Room Committee.

As a Trustee of St Aidan’s JCR CIO, I have extra insight into the governance work the DSU Trustee Board does. I was also heavily involved with establishing Aidan’s JCR as a charity, this taught me the importance of a charity through following its charitable aims. With the DSU I would be committed to holding the organisation to account, ensuring that decisions are being made with the best interest of its students at heart.

Outside of my university life, I currently support Durham and District RSPCA by fostering a 9 month old tabby. I am also a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer.
