Manifesto

Hi, I’m Jonah. I’m a Politics finalist from Mildert, and I want to be your Welfare and Liberation Officer.

We are living through unprecedented times of isolation. Durham needs a compassionate activist with the experience to bring tangible change. As an Association President and Student Support Panel Member, I can build a supportive community. Now is the time to put your mental health first, push for preventive measures against sexual violence, and elevate voices that need to be heard.

Make Mental Health A Priority

Students’ mental health has been pushed to its limits by the pandemic. To help every single student, I will:

  • Launch a preventative campaign to empower you with self-care techniques and create a non-judgemental environment.
  • Develop a signposting guide so you can recognise the benefits and detriments of all support groups.
  • Conduct a counselling consultation to understand your needs.
  • Increase support for welfare reps by streamlining access to mental health services; provide training on intersectional/minority issues and campaigning; and advertise individual welfare spaces.

Make Our Community Supportive and Safer

Students have been vocal in their calls to stop sexual violence and discrimination, and protect students from online harassment. To further this effort, I will:

  • Educate societies about safe online socials and expand nightline training.
  • Prevent misconduct by extending bystander training to the JCRs.
  • Lobby the counselling service to hire minority specialists.
  • Support survivors by publicizing the ‘Report and Support’ tool and assistance groups.

Make Minority Voices Heard

The best liberation work has come from student volunteers. To continue assisting them, I will:

  • Give student leaders a contacts list.
  • Implement weekly ‘media takeovers’ on social media and organise monthly meetings with Association Presidents.
  • Work with stakeholders to enact the Culture Commission’s recommendations.
