James Burton
SU President candidate

Manifesto

I’m James, a PPE finalist and St Chad’s JCR President. Whilst getting a fair deal for students at St Chad’s over the last year, I have seen the DSU push prices up at our College bars and cut off funding to student groups. The SU has achieved much to mitigate against Covid-19 and debate Durham culture – work that must continue. Yet with the SU lacking broad support amongst students, it’s time for change.

Let’s get the #DSUDoneDifferently

I have a proven track-record of improving the experience of the students I have represented. As Undergraduate Faculty Rep for Social Science and Health, I brought student voices to the table and got departments to answer for questionable policy decisions. And as JCR President of St Chad’s, I have successfully fought to decrease the price of self-catered accommodation at the College, ensured a lowered price of JCR fees, and prioritised working with Social Mobility groups to make Chad’s more affordable.

Beliefs and Plans

  • Durham is a collegiate University, and it is time that the SU starts acting as such. With most students identifying with their College, it is time the SU’s extortionate funding is redistributed more fairly to the Common Rooms. The SU Strategy is coming up for renewal this year – work must be taken to find how best your SU finances can support Colleges.
  • Without brave and radical action, embarrassing the University at Open Days and Freshers Week, major campaigns will go nowhere. The untapped power of mass student action can turn around unproductive Ripped Off campaigns and get proper results for all.
  • The work of the Culture Commission and expensive results of the Democracy Review must be utilised and listened to. If recent news reports on Durham show anything, it is the importance of these projects.
